About the competition program

The competition program includes a combination of individual and team races.

Individual races: Strokes for individual races are chosen at random before competition gets underway, allowing team members to work on diversifying their aquatic stroke skills. This includes Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle, Individual Medley or Combination (whereby two strokes are split over the race distance).

Team races: In addition to individual races, there are a range of relay races during each competition. This includes, Mixed Team Relay, Team Relay (4 x 25m and 4 x 50m), and Brace Relay (2 x 25m , 2 x 50m).

TEAM format & divisions

  • 10-18 swimmers on a team

  • Mini and Junior teams can be made up of all males, all females or a combination.

  • Open teams are made up of both males and females.

  • Each swimmer is first categorised by age group e.g. Open (any age) or Juniors (15 yrs & under) or Minis (11 yrs & under), and then allocated a division based on swimming ability.

  • Swimmers will participate in a minimum of three and a maximum of five races each match.

    • Most Mini and Junior programs include:

      • Individual events (25m Fly, 25m Back, 25m Breast, 25m Free, 50m Fly, 50m Back, 50m Breast, 50m Free and 100m IM), with a maximum of three swimmers competing for each team

      • Brace Relays (2 x 25m and 2 x 50m), with the strokes chosen at random for every program and can cater for a maximum of three teams

      • Relays (4 x 25m IM, 4 x 50m IM, 4 x 25m Free, 4 x 50m Free) with teams made up of four swimmers and only one team allowed to compete for each of these relays.

    • Most Open programs include:

      • Individual events (50m, 100m and 200m races) with each event stroke chosen at random and the ability for combination races

      • Brace Relays (2 x 50m boys and 2 x 50m girls), with the strokes chosen at random every program and can cater for a maximum of three teams

      • Relays (4 x 50m Mixed (2 boys, 2 girls), 4 x 50m boys and 4 x 50m girls), with teams made up of four swimmers and only one team allowed to compete for each of these relays.

In the EVENT OF A DRAW, A SWIMMER ‘SHOOT OUT’ WILL DETERMINE THE COMPETITION WINNER.

If scores are tied at the end of the match, both teams will have five minutes to select their shoot-out competitors, in race order and before the shoot-out begins - three males and three females for the Open division and six competitors of any gender for Mini and Junior divisions. The choice of stroke will then be decided by random draw. Opens will swim 50m and Minis and Juniors will swim 25m.

Two consecutive wins will give a team the overall win. If no team gets two wins in a row, then the final two competitors (the 3rd female and male competitor in Opens or 5th and 6th Minis or Juniors swimmers) will race in a Brace Relay (2 x 50m for Opens and 2 x 25m for Minis or Juniors), with the winning team awarded the overall victory.
